Last month I had the opportunity to compete in the Miss California USA pageant in Long Beach. My first impression walking into our orientation meeting was noticing how stunningly beautiful all of the contestants were. My second impression was realizing that not only were they absolutely gorgeous, these women were driven, goal-oriented, intelligent, and all striving to be the best version of themselves possible. It’s incredibly humbling to walk into a group of powerful women and be considered a part of it. For me, pageantry is first about personal growth, and being the best Shannon I can be. Then, and even more importantly, it is about taking what I have learned and serving the people in my community with it. My experience at Miss California USA was exciting and terrifying, fulfilling and challenging, but it was not for me to keep to myself. All along my goal has been to take the confidence and skills I have been given and pass them along to others. I’m so excited to see what comes from it this year!
